Brunswick -Today, Bruce Poliquin, candidate for Maine Governor, said Maine’s next Governor must first fundamentally reform state spending in order to permanently improve Maine’s economy.  In response to a recent article outlining the economic plans of all the major party gubernatorial candidates, Poliquin said only his strategy starts with curbing Maine’s addiction to spending - the primary source of the state’s economic problems.

“As the saying goes, when you’re in a hole, stop digging.  Similarly, when you’re broke, stop spending,” Poliquin said.  “Competent managers in the private sector know that you should only spend what you take in - particularly in tough times.  Our state government doesn’t follow this principle, and it is apparently foreign to almost all the other candidates for Governor.”

Poliquin was responding to an article published by the Portland Press-Herald on Sunday featuring interviews with all the major party gubernatorial candidates about their plans to improve Maine’s economy.  Just one other candidate came close to mentioning state spending as an issue.  Poliquin has made spending reduction a central plank in his campaign from day one.

“Spending has to be first,” Poliquin added. “Frankly, I was shocked to see many of the candidates not only endorse more borrowing, but increased spending, as well.  This shows an incredible lack of understanding about what our problems are, how our economy works, and the critical steps necessary to bring jobs back to Maine.”

“Maine can no longer afford failed leadership from those with little or no experience in the private sector managing budgets, spending wisely, and creating jobs.  We must bring competent management to Augusta. It will only come from someone with successful financial experience, and who has dealt first-hand with Maine’s specific economic, fiscal, and job-related problems,” concluded Poliquin.
